The ITR full form is Income Tax Return: the form you file with the Income Tax Department each year to report what you earned, what you claim as deductions, and how much tax you owe or have already paid. Filing it closes your tax account for the year and is the only way to claim back extra tax deducted from your income.
Most people reading this are dealing with income of FY 2025-26, which goes in a return for AY 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Income earned from 1 April 2026 falls in tax year 2026-27, which comes under the new Income-tax Act, 2025. This hub explains the idea, then links every guide in our ITR section.

ITR full form and meaning in plain English
ITR means Income Tax Return. In plain English, it is a statement you send to the tax department listing every source of income for the year, the deductions you claim, the tax already paid through TDS, TCS or advance tax, and the final balance. If the balance is positive you pay it before filing; if tax paid was more than tax due, the return becomes a refund claim.
People also say "ITR return", which repeats the word, but the meaning is the same. In banking, an ITR full form query usually comes from a loan or visa form: lenders ask for copies of the last two or three returns as proof of income, because a filed and processed return is a government record.
What is ITR filing and who must do it
Filing is the act of submitting the return online on the e-filing portal and then verifying it. Under section 139(1), you must file if your total income before deductions goes above the basic exemption limit: ₹4 lakh under the new regime, or ₹2.5 lakh under the old regime (₹3 lakh at age 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh at 80 and above). Even below that, filing is compulsory in some cases:
| Condition during FY 2025-26 | Limit |
|---|---|
| Deposits across one or more current accounts | Above ₹1 crore |
| Deposits in savings accounts | ₹50 lakh or more |
| Spending on foreign travel | Above ₹2 lakh |
| Electricity bills | Above ₹1 lakh |
| TDS and TCS in the year | ₹25,000 or more (₹50,000 for seniors) |
| Business turnover or professional receipts | Above ₹60 lakh or ₹10 lakh |
| Foreign assets or foreign income held by a resident | Any amount |
What is income tax return with example
A salaried employee with a refund. Kavya earns a ₹15,00,000 salary in FY 2025-26 and sticks with the new regime. Her employer deducted ₹1,05,000 as TDS.
Step 1: taxable income is ₹15,00,000 minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so ₹14,25,000. Step 2: tax is nil up to ₹4 lakh, ₹20,000 on ₹4 to 8 lakh, ₹40,000 on ₹8 to 12 lakh, and ₹33,750 (15%) on the last ₹2,25,000: total ₹93,750. Step 3: add 4% cess of ₹3,750, making ₹97,500. Step 4: TDS was ₹1,05,000, so she has paid ₹7,500 too much.
Her ITR reports all this. Once it is processed, the ₹7,500 can come back to her bank account. Without the return, it stays with the government.

Why file even when no tax is due
- Refunds: TDS on salary, bank interest or rent is returned only through a return.
- Losses: business and capital losses carry forward only if the return is filed by the due date.
- Proof of income: lenders, embassies and tender committees ask for past ITRs.
- Fewer notices: the department matches your AIS against your return; a filed return answers most questions in advance.

The return under the Income-tax Act, 2025
The 2025 Act took over from 1 April 2026 and drops the paired previous year and assessment year labels. Income is earned and described in a single tax year, so income earned between 1 April 2026 and the following 31 March belongs to tax year 2026-27. Its return will be filed after that tax year closes, under the new Act and new forms.
Nothing changes for the return you file now for FY 2025-26: it is still an AY 2026-27 return under the 1961 Act. See the 2025 Act overview for the wider changes.
We describe the return system in general terms; your own filing duty depends on your facts. When in doubt, check the help section of the e-filing portal, or talk it through with a chartered accountant.
