Income Tax Calculator: New and Old Regime

CalculatorsCalculatorBoth regimesUpdated 2 Nov 2026

This income tax calculator takes your income, deductions, regime and age and shows the tax you owe, slab by slab, with the rebate, surcharge, 4% cess and a monthly TDS figure. On a ₹15 lakh salary, for example, it shows ₹97,500 of tax in the new regime for FY 2025-26.

The slabs did not change between FY 2025-26 (return filed in AY 2026-27) and tax year 2026-27, to which the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies, so one set of figures serves both. Below the tool you will find the slab tables, the method behind the numbers and examples you can check by hand.

How to use this income tax calculator

Enter your gross salary or other income, choose the regime, pick your age band, and add the deductions you really claim (only the old regime uses most of them). The tool returns five lines. Taxable income is income minus the standard deduction and deductions. Slab tax shows each band and the tax in it. Rebate shows what the 87A rebate (section 156 for tax year 2026-27) removes. Surcharge and cess are added on top. Monthly TDS is the yearly figure divided by twelve, a rough guide to what your employer should deduct.

It is an estimate for normal slab income. If you have capital gains at special rates, business income, or losses to set off, use it as a starting point and see how gains are taxed.

How to calculate income tax on salary with example

Salary ₹15,00,000, new regime, FY 2025-26.

  1. Less standard deduction ₹75,000: taxable income ₹14,25,000.
  2. Tax: nil on ₹4 lakh; 5% of ₹4 lakh = ₹20,000; 10% of ₹4 lakh = ₹40,000; 15% of ₹2,25,000 = ₹33,750. Total ₹93,750.
  3. Rebate: none, as income is above ₹12 lakh and well past the marginal relief range.
  4. Cess 4% = ₹3,750. Total tax ₹97,500, about ₹8,125 a month.

Same ₹15 lakh salary, old regime. Standard deduction ₹50,000, 80C ₹1,50,000, 80D ₹25,000: taxable income ₹12,75,000. Tax: ₹12,500 (2.5 to 5 lakh) + ₹1,00,000 (5 to 10 lakh) + 30% of ₹2,75,000 (₹82,500) = ₹1,95,000. Cess ₹7,800. Total ₹2,02,800. Here the new regime saves ₹1,05,300. To test your own deductions, use the regime comparison tool.

Tax on 15 lakh, 20 lakh and other incomes in the new regime

New regime tax on salary incomes, FY 2025-26 and tax year 2026-27 (resident, below ₹50 lakh)
Gross salaryTaxable after ₹75,000Tax plus 4% cess
₹10,00,000₹9,25,000Nil (rebate)
₹12,75,000₹12,00,000Nil (rebate)
₹15,00,000₹14,25,000₹97,500
₹18,00,000₹17,25,000₹1,50,800
₹20,00,000₹19,25,000₹1,92,400
₹25,00,000₹24,25,000₹3,19,800

Check one row: on ₹19,25,000 the slab tax is ₹20,000 + ₹40,000 + ₹60,000 + 20% of ₹3,25,000 (₹65,000) = ₹1,85,000, and cess takes it to ₹1,92,400. Just above ₹12 lakh of taxable income, marginal relief keeps the tax from jumping.

Reading the result: what the figures mean

  • Effective rate is total tax divided by gross income. On ₹15 lakh in the new regime it is 6.5%, far below the 15% top band.
  • Monthly TDS assumes the same salary all year. Bonuses or a mid year job change will shift it; give your employer your other income and any old regime proofs.
  • Advance tax: if tax not covered by TDS is ₹10,000 or more, it must be paid in instalments by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. The advance tax planner splits it for you.
  • Exemptions such as HRA or gratuity reduce income before this step. Work them out with the HRA tool or the gratuity guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is this income tax calculator for FY 2025-26 or tax year 2026-27?

Both. The slabs, rebate and standard deduction are the same for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) and tax year 2026-27, so the result applies to either.

How much tax on 15 lakh income in the new regime?

On a ₹15 lakh salary the taxable income is ₹14,25,000 after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Tax is ₹93,750 plus ₹3,750 cess, so ₹97,500 in all.

How do I calculate income tax on salary by hand?

Subtract the standard deduction and any allowed deductions, apply each slab rate to the slice of income in it, take off the rebate if you qualify, then add surcharge and 4% cess.

Does the calculator work for the old regime?

Yes. Choose the old regime and your age band, then enter deductions such as 80C and 80D. The old regime slabs differ for people aged 60 to 79 and 80 or more.

Can I use it as an advance tax calculator?

It gives the yearly tax. Subtract expected TDS; if ₹10,000 or more remains, pay it as advance tax in four instalments.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent or stored.
