Income tax login happens on the department's own e-filing portal, incometax.gov.in, where you sign in with your PAN (or linked Aadhaar) as user ID and then a password or an Aadhaar OTP. Business Tax Slab is an independent reference site, not the portal: we explain the screens, and you type your details only on the official site.
Once inside, the same account lets you file a return, view Form 26AS and AIS, pay tax, track a refund and answer notices. The steps below follow the portal's own labels so you can match them on screen. For ITR e filing after signing in, see how to file ITR, and for the bigger picture start at what an ITR is.

Income tax login steps on the official portal
- In your browser, type incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal to open the e-filing portal. Check the address bar before typing anything.
- Click Login at the top right of the home page.
- Type your PAN, or Aadhaar if it is linked, in the Enter your User ID box and click Continue.
- Look at the secure access message shown on screen. It is the personal phrase you chose when registering. Tick the box only if it matches.
- Enter your password and click Continue. If you prefer, choose the Aadhaar OTP option instead of the password.
- Your dashboard opens, showing your name, pending actions and recent filings.
If the secure access message is wrong or missing, stop. You may be on a fake page. Close the tab and type the address again yourself.
Ways to sign in to the income tax portal
| Method | What you need | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| User ID and password | PAN or Aadhaar, portal password | Everyday use |
| Aadhaar OTP | Aadhaar linked to PAN, mobile linked to Aadhaar | Forgotten password or quick access |
| Net banking | Bank account linked to your PAN, bank login | Users who rarely remember portal passwords |
| Tax professional login | Separate user ID for chartered accountants and ERIs | Filing for clients |
Net banking login starts in your own bank's internet banking site, which passes you to the e-filing portal after a check. The bank never sees your portal password.
First time on the income tax e filing portal: register
- On the home page click Register.
- Pick Taxpayer, enter your PAN and click Validate.
- Fill in your name, date of birth and gender exactly as on the PAN card.
- Give a mobile number and email; verify both with the OTPs sent.
- Set a password and your secure access message, then submit.
Register only with your own PAN. If you have no PAN yet, the portal's instant e-PAN service gives one using Aadhaar.
What you can do after itr login
| Task | Menu path as the portal shows it |
|---|---|
| File a return | File Income Tax Return, inside the e-File menu |

| Open AIS | Services > Annual Information Statement (AIS) |

How to pay income tax online through the portal
Paying income tax online uses the e-Pay Tax service. Choose New Payment, pick the Income Tax tile, select the assessment year and the type of payment (advance tax or self-assessment tax), and enter the amount. You can pay by net banking, debit card, UPI or a payment gateway, or generate a challan to pay over the counter or by NEFT/RTGS. The challan receipt carries a CIN; keep it, because you quote it in your return.
For FY 2025-26 income, a balance due before filing is self-assessment tax for AY 2026-27. Tax for income from 1 April 2026 is paid for tax year 2026-27 under the new Act. See paying advance tax online for instalments.

Staying safe with your login
- Type the address yourself, or use a bookmark. Do not sign in from links in SMS or email messages.
- The department never asks for your password, OTP or bank PIN over the phone, by SMS or by email.
- Refund messages asking you to click and update bank details are a common fraud. Check refunds only after signing in on the official portal.
- Share your password with no one, including tax helpers; they have their own professional login.
- Log out after use, especially on a shared or office computer.
Business Tax Slab explains the portal but cannot see, store or recover your account. Screens and menu names change from time to time, so follow what the official portal shows and use its help desk if a step differs.
