The main income tax customer care number for e-filing, refunds and intimations is the toll free line 1800 103 0025, with 1800 419 0025 as the second toll free option; both work from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday. Separate lines handle AIS, TDS certificates, PAN and outstanding demands, listed in the table below exactly as the department's contact page gives them.
Business Tax Slab is not the department and cannot see your return. Call only the numbers listed on the official e-filing portal contact page, and never share your password or OTP with anyone who calls you.

When people search for the income tax department customer care number, the income tax department helpline number or the income tax department toll free number, these five rows are the full official answer. The ITR helpline number for return and refund calls is the first row. Numbers starting 1800 are toll free within India. The +91 numbers are normal paid lines, useful from abroad. The demand centre also places outgoing calls from two of its numbers; a call from them may be genuine, but it will never ask for your login.
Is there an income tax customer care number 24x7
No official income tax line answers round the clock. The e-filing and refund desk closes at 8 pm and does not take calls on weekends, while the PAN and TAN line runs every day from 7 am to 11 pm. Outside these hours, the e-filing portal itself works all the time: you can check refund status, download an intimation, respond to a notice or raise a grievance online and get a reference number.
Search results showing a "24x7 income tax customer care" mobile number are not from the department. Treat them as unsafe.
Income tax refund customer care: what to ask
For a refund query, call the e-filing desk on 1800 103 0025. Keep ready your PAN, the year you are asking about (AY 2026-27, for example) and the 15 digit acknowledgement number of the return. The agent can tell you whether the return is processed, whether the refund was sent, and why it failed, such as a bank account that is not pre-validated or a name mismatch.
Most refund problems are faster to solve yourself. Read the refund status guide and the reasons a refund is delayed before calling.
Income tax complaint online: steps
- Sign in at the e-filing portal.
- Open the Grievances menu and choose Submit Grievance.
- Pick the department or wing your complaint is about, such as the processing centre for refunds or TRACES for TDS credits.
- Choose the category, the assessment year and the acknowledgement or document number.
- Describe the problem in plain words and attach a PDF if needed, then submit.
- Note the grievance number and track it under Grievances, then Grievance Status.
A written grievance leaves a record, which a phone call does not. Use it when a refund is stuck for months or a rectification has had no reply.
TDS helpline number and other specific desks
If your employer or bank deducted tax but the credit is missing, the problem usually sits in the deductor's TDS return. The TRACES desk on 1800 103 0344 can see statement status, but only the deductor can file a correction. Ask the deductor first, then check Form 26AS again.
For AIS entries you do not recognise, call 1800 103 4215 or, better, submit feedback inside AIS. For a demand you think is wrong, use the Response to Outstanding Demand option under Pending Actions on the portal, and call 1800 309 0130 if you need help with the process.
Mistakes people make when contacting the department
| Mistake | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Calling a number from an advert or social media | Use only numbers on the official contact page |
| Sharing OTP or password with a caller | Never share them; the department does not ask |
| Calling the e-filing desk about a TDS mismatch | Ask the deductor, then TRACES on 1800 103 0344 |
| Calling without the acknowledgement number | Keep PAN, AY and acknowledgement number ready |
| Calling repeatedly about a delayed refund | Raise a grievance and keep the reference |
