Express ITR

Short answer

A private tax return software product, not the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal

Express ITR Explained: Private Software or the Government Portal?

ITRSoftwareUpdated 2 Nov 2026

Express ITR is a tax return preparation software sold by a private company, mainly to tax practitioners; it is not the Income Tax Department and not its e-filing portal. A return prepared in it still has to land on the department's system, and you can check it there yourself.

This site is not affiliated with Express ITR; this is an independent explanation. People often search "ITR express" when they mean the official site, so this page sets out what the product is, how a return filed through any software reaches the department, and how to confirm your own return. The complete filing steps are in our guide on how to file ITR.

Whatever tool prepares the return, the legal filing happens only when the department accepts it and issues an acknowledgement number. A draft saved in any software is not a filed return.

How returns prepared in tax software reach the department

Software of this kind works in one of two ways. Some products are allowed to submit returns straight to the department through its approved channel for e-return intermediaries, usually after the taxpayer gives consent on the portal. Others produce a JSON file that you or your tax preparer upload on the portal by hand.

Either way, the department's checks run on its side. If your income does not match the AIS or Form 26AS, the return can be processed with a demand or sent a notice, no matter which software filed it. Compare figures with your AIS and Form 26AS before you submit.

Checking an Express ITR filing on the official portal

If a practitioner filed your return through software, you can see it yourself in a few minutes:

  1. Your PAN and password get you into the e-filing portal.
  2. From the menu bar, choose View Filed Returns, listed in e-File, inside Income Tax Returns.
  3. Find AY 2026-27. Note the acknowledgement number, filing date and filing section.
  4. Check the status line. It should read verified, then processed.
  5. If it says pending verification, e-verify now. Without that, the return does not count.

Verification options are on the e-verify ITR page.

Filing directly instead of through software

A salaried person with one employer, some bank interest and no business income can usually file on the portal without any software. The portal pre-fills salary, TDS and interest from the employer's TDS return and from bank reports. You review, add what is missing and submit. The ITR for salaried people page walks through that case.

Software helps more where a practitioner prepares dozens of returns, or where business accounts, depreciation and audit data have to flow into ITR-3, ITR-5 or ITR-6.

Mistakes people make with return software

Where taxpayers go wrong when someone files through software
MistakeBetter way
Assuming a return is filed because the software shows it as completeLook for the acknowledgement number under View Filed Returns
Giving your portal password to anyone who asksChange it after the season and check login history
Skipping e-verificationVerify within 30 days of filing
Not reading the return before it goesAsk for the draft and match it with AIS and Form 16

This is general information, not advice on your return or on any product. Portal screens change now and then, so for your own case, check the department's portal or consult a chartered accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Is Express ITR the official income tax website?

No. It is a private software product. The official place to file and check returns is the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal.

Is a return filed through ITR express software valid?

Yes, if the department accepts it and issues an acknowledgement number, and you e-verify it within 30 days. You can confirm both on the portal under View Filed Returns.

Can I download my ITR-V if a practitioner filed through software?

Yes. Sign in to the portal, open View Filed Returns, choose the assessment year and download the acknowledgement form.

Do I need software to file my own ITR?

Not for simple cases. The portal's online form, with pre-filled salary and interest data, is enough for most salaried people and pensioners.
